Damselfly — Lacquer Brooch

insperation
If dragonflies are warriors of the sky, damselflies are poets of the water’s edge.
They appear only where water remains clear—a quiet confirmation of purity.
Shaped in natural lacquer and silver, the wings shimmer with gold-sprinkled lacquer and jewel beetle wing powder. Polished by hand, the surface shifts from green to blue to violet, capturing not the form alone, but the subtle movement of light itself.
For those who, in a world that never stops moving, still carry a light that is unmistakably theirs—rare, quietly alive.

Form & Light
The wings are composed through gold-sprinkled lacquer.
Fine metal particles and jewel beetle wing powder are embedded into the surface, then polished by hand over time. As light moves, the surface shifts—green, blue, violet—never fixed, never fully revealed.
What is captured is not the form alone,
but the quiet movement of light itself.
Material

Natural lacquer
Applied layer by layer, each stage left to cure before the next begins. The surface develops depth gradually—formed through time, not speed.

Gold-sprinkled lacquer
A traditional technique originating in ancient China, in which metal powders are integrated into lacquer and revealed through polishing. The image emerges from within, rather than sitting on the surface.

Jewel beetle wing powder
Long used in lacquer work for its iridescence. Its color shifts with light, recalling the subtle vitality of living wings.

Imperial green jadeite
The eyes are set with cabochon-cut jadeite, chosen for its clarity and depth of color.

24k gold
Held within lacquer, the gold becomes part of the surface itself—stable, enduring, unchanged over time.

Silver (lost-wax cast)
The form is first carved in wax, then cast in silver. Each line retains the sensitivity of the original carving.
